The Turin exhibition, curated by Tiziana Bonomo, features sixty photographs by Tiziana and Gianni Baldizzone, illustrating the transmission of knowledge and the master-student relationship in diverse countries, each with its own discipline, capturing the universality of these practices. The photographs portray men and women from diverse countries and cultures in the act of passing knowledge from one person to another: dyers from Mali and ceramists from Sèvres, Italian violin makers and Swiss watchmakers, gilders from France and gold leaf beaters from Burma, theater actors, art smiths, and therapists.
The photographic research, spanning over seven years of travel across Europe, Asia, and Africa, seeks to capture and convey to the public, through photography, human relationships, living together, and the dialogue between master and student, demonstrating the bonds generated by the act of transmission: intergenerational, intercultural, and interprofessional. The exhibition presents a narrative that unfolds from the encounter with the material, to the master's search, up until the separation, when the transfer of knowledge is complete. In this process, tradition and a spirit of innovation merge, helping to preserve a heritage of cultural diversity. The exhibition is structured around three moments that ideally evoke the different phases of transmission: "ENCOUNTERS": the discovery of a subject, the passion and spark for an art or craft; the encounter between master and student, their bond and their relationships. "IMPREGNATION": the different ways of absorbing knowledge and, at the same time, the impregnation of a subject, of a different culture. "LEARNINGS": the practices, knowledge, and human values through which one learns a trade or profession; tools, gestures, training through words, example, observation and imitation.
