The exhibition illustrates the role played by Turin's cultural milieu between the 19th and 20th centuries in the formation and dissemination of knowledge and the representation of Italy. By exploring the synergies of various social and institutional actors and the places and spaces of knowledge—from universities to publishing, from schools to major exhibitions—the exhibition highlights the emergence of new historical, scientific, and geographical knowledge that gradually contributed to giving substance and form to the nation's image.
The exhibition, organised by the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Turin in collaboration with the National Museum of Risorgimento The Italian museum, which hosts it, exhibits 169 pieces of various types, within a path divided into five thematic sections: The Savoy dynastic myth – Italian nationality and exiles – Knowledge, representation and governance of the territory – Disseminating the image of the nation – Nation and territory in major exhibitions.
The initiative, in the centenary year of Italy's entry into the First World War, is carried out in collaboration with the Historical Archives of the City of Turin and the Lions Club Torino Monviso.
