The exhibition From the '60s to the '60s. A century after the unification of Italy, Pop Art aims to compare two crucial moments in the history of our country, through their respective artistic testimonies, to trace their boundaries and coordinates. The energies that animated the Risorgimento are placed in dialogue with the climate of strong change that determined the economic boom of the 1960s.
The great Italian historical painting with a celebratory character and, at the same time, an expression of the painter-soldiers who took part in the wars for independence and then portrayed them in their paintings – Felice Cerruti Bauduc, Massimo d'Azeglio, Angelo Trezzini, Michele Cammarano, to name a few – compares himself with the artists of Italian Pop Art.
Thus, a succession of works by Mimmo Rotella, Giosetta Fioroni, Piero Gilardi, Ugo Nespolo, Enrico Baj, and the cursed painters of the Piazza del Popolo School—Mario Schifano, Tano Festa, and Franco Angeli—are displayed. In a rapidly evolving Italy, they looked to the worlds of cinema and advertising, politics, and society, giving rise to entirely new forms of expression and languages. A visual short circuit that allows us to identify connections among the exhibited works, whether by antithesis or analogy, through an unusual and emotionally charged display.
