These documents have come to the Museum since its establishment. Suffice it to say that the founding nucleus of the Museum: the donation of Vittorio Emanuele II's relics to the City of Turin by Umberto I in 1878, which gave rise to the intention of founding a museum of national history, was accompanied by a letter, still preserved in the archive today. Over the years, the original endowment has been enriched through recurring private donations that support and recognize the Museum's function, established as early as the first statute of 1903, to collect, organize and preserve "all documents and objects that may contribute to the study of the history of the Italian Risorgimento".

Alongside true archival collections of politicians, soldiers, patriots, families and institutions, there are collections of manuscripts, correspondence, diaries, memoirs, public and private documents of sovereigns, heads of state, exponents of the aristocracy and the European bourgeoisie, which document the collecting taste of the time. The complex of the Historical Archives of the Museum has been declared by the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendency of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta to be of particularly important historical interest.
