These documents have been received by the Museum since its establishment. Suffice it to say that the founding nucleus of the Museum: the donation of the relics of Vittorio Emanuele II to the City of Turin by Umberto I in 1878, which gave rise to the intention to establish a museum of national history, was accompanied by a letter, still preserved in the archives today. Over the years, the original endowment has been enriched through recurring private donations that validate and recognize the Museum's function, established in its first statute of 1903, to collect, organize, and preserve "all documents and objects that can contribute to the study of the history of the Risorgimento Italian".
Alongside the archives of politicians, soldiers, patriots, families, and institutions, the museum also houses collections of manuscripts, correspondence, diaries, memoirs, and public and private documents of sovereigns, heads of state, and members of the European aristocracy and bourgeoisie, which document the era's collecting tastes. The Museum's historical archives have been declared of particular historical importance by the Archives and Bibliography Superintendency of Piedmont and the Aosta Valley.
